Dalkeith woman caught in Cancun

30 08 2007

A DALKEITH woman was amongst those caught in Cancun as Hurricaine Dean raged its way into Mexico.
Kelly Gamrot (21) is on holiday in the region with her boyfriend Greg Dodds (20), his brother and their five friends.

Kelly’s mother, Mrs Diane Gamrot said on Tuesday: “At the moment they are confined to the hotel awaiting news of whether they have to go into a shelter or whether they will sit it out in the hotel.”

Kelly and her medical student boyfriend met at Dalkeith High School. She now works as a learning support assistant at St David’s High School and is a youth worker in the Dalkeith area.

Mrs Gamrot said that the Cancun holiday rep has been having meetings with authorities to keep the holidaymakers updated on the current situation.

“I must admit he seems very good,” she added. “The whole family are terrified and constantly watching the news or updates on the internet.

“There is a six hour time difference and Kelly has been phoning us in the late afternoon. Although she is nervous, she seems OK.

“We told her that as long as she is safe this is going to be a once in a life time experience. She is not a daft child, she is sensible and the group she is with are all very close.”

About 40,000 tourists in Cancun had evacuated the area by Monday, with around 20,000 remaining.

A hurricane warning
has been in effect from Belize to Cancun, although the resort of Cancun is likely to be spared a direct hit. However, the city could still see tropical storm-force winds.

Officials in Cancun organized additional flights to let tens of thousands of tourists leave before Dean arrived, meaning the hotel zone was largely emptied out.

The Category Five storm — the highest strength — came ashore at 3.30am (8.30 GMT) on Monday morning.

Cancun and other popular Mexican resorts are escaping a “direct hit” but that has not stopped around two-thirds of Cancun’s tourists leaving the area. Some holidaymakers camped overnight at Cancun’s airport to find a flight while others were turned away.

Mexican hotel tries to throw out Nobel Peace Prize winner Menchu

30 08 2007

Cancun, Mexico - Nobel Peace Prize winner and current Guatemalan presidential candidate Rigoberta Menchu was on Tuesday the victim of discrimination at a hotel in the Mexican seaside resort Cancun, Quintana Roo state radio reported.

Newsreader David Romero said he himself was present when the hotel’s security personnel tried to get Menchu out of the lobby of the five-star hotel.

Romero - who was there to interview the woman awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 - added that the expulsion was prevented by people who recognized the activist for the rights of indigenous peoples.

Menchu was in Cancun at the invitation of Mexican President Felipe Calderon, to take part in an assembly of the National Association of Drinking Water and sanitation.

SHOWERS AND A FEW THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE IN ASSOCIATION WITH A
TROPICAL WAVE WITH A TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED ABOUT 600 MILES EAST OF
THE WINDWARD ISLANDS.  ALTHOUGH THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY IS CURRENTLY
LIMITED…THE WAVE APPEARS TO HAVE BECOME A LITTLE BETTER DEFINED
THIS MORNING.  UPPER-LEVEL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO BE FAVORABLE FOR
DEVELOPMENT…AND THIS SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A
TROPICAL DEPRESSION OVER THE NEXT DAY OR TWO AS IT MOVES GENERALLY
WESTWARD.  INTERESTS IN THE WINDWARD ISLANDS SHOULD MONITOR THE
PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM.

A SMALL AREA OF LOW PRESSURE HAS DEVELOPED ABOUT 350 MILES EAST OF
CAPE HATTERAS.  THIS SYSTEM…WHICH IS CURRENTLY STATIONARY…IS
EXPECTED TO BEGIN MOVING NORTHEASTWARD LATER TODAY AHEAD OF AN
APPROACHING FRONTAL SYSTEM.  THE LOW WILL HAVE A BRIEF OPPORTUNITY
FOR TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION BEFORE BECOMING OVERTAKEN BY THE
FRONT IN A COUPLE OF DAYS.

SHOWER ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED THIS MORNING WITH THE WESTWARD-MOVING
TROPICAL WAVE OVER THE BAY OF CAMPECHE.  THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO
MOVE INLAND OVER MAINLAND MEXICO LATER TODAY BEFORE SIGNIFICANT
DEVELOPMENT CAN OCCUR.  NEVERTHELESS…LOCALLY HEAVY RAINS ARE
LIKELY OVER PORTIONS OF EASTERN AND CENTRAL MAINLAND MEXICO OVER
THE NEXT DAY OR TWO…AND THESE RAINS COULD CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING
FLASH FLOODS AND MUD SLIDES.

A LARGE AREA OF LOW PRESSURE…ASSOCIATED WITH A TROPICAL WAVE…IS
CENTERED ABOUT 250 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS.
SHOWER ACTIVITY WITH THIS SYSTEM IS MINIMAL AND DEVELOPMENT…IF
ANY…IS EXPECTED TO BE SLOW TO OCCUR.

SHOWER ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE DISORGANIZED NON-TROPICAL AREA
OF LOW PRESSURE A FEW HUNDRED MILES EAST OF THE GEORGIA COAST HAS
DIMINISHED…AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IS NOT EXPECTED.

ELSEWHERE…TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

Popular Cancun and Cozumel areas escape Dean’s rath

30 08 2007

The major tourist areas of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, Mexico, escaped relatively unscathed from the fury of Hurricane Dean, which made landfall as a Category 5 storm near Costa Maya and Majahual, some 225 miles south of Cancun. Tourists had largely evacuated the three major coastal areas by the time Dean roared ashore before dawn Tuesday, with some 75,000 tourists fleeing by air or to more secure areas inland by car or charter busses, according to the Mexico Tourism Board. Those who couldn’t or decided not to get out rode out the storm in their hotels or at the airports. Hotels in Mexico are mostly open for business and reported minimal damage, and airlines are making their return to the affected areas. Resorts in Cancun, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen that did sustain damage reported mostly broken windows and blown sand. Damage to Costa Maya, the Mexican cruise port near the border of Belize where Hurricane Dean made landfall, is still being assessed, said Cesar Lizarraga, Costa Maya’s director of sales and marketing. Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste, the Mexican airport group that operates several of the country’s top airports, said the Cancun, Cozumel and Merida airports have resumed operations and reported minimal or no damage.

The Guelaguetza Festival in Oaxaca

30 08 2007

Question: What do the King and Queen of Spain, the Emperor of Japan, and the Princess of Monaco all have in common?

Answer: They’ve all attended the Oaxacan festival of Guelaguetza.

The pride of Oaxaca, held on the last two Mondays of July, this year July 17th and 24th, the festival of Guelaguetza is Oaxaca’s answer to Rio’s carnival. Planning and preparation take nearly one year and the results show it. It is spectacular to say the least. For the weeks prior to the festival it already pervades virtually every aspect of Oaxacaqueño life.

Beginning in the morning around 9:00 or 10:00, brilliantly costumed folk dancers from each of the seven regions of Oaxaca perform traditional dances to live music and toss offerings of fruit and produce to spectators at the end of each folk routine. Culminating the festival are the colorful Pineapple dance by the agile women of the Papaloapan region and the exciting, stately, Feather Dance by men depicting the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Seating for the event, held at the Auditorio de Guelaguetza on a hill known as “Cerro de Fortin” to the north overlooking the city, go on sale months in advance of the event. There are free seating areas in this open-air stadium but you must be there very early for any hope of a seat. You’ll need to wear a wide-brimmed hat or sunshade and bring plenty of water to drink as the festivities last several hours. The Saturday prior to the main event, delegations from each of the seven regions stage a colorful, musical promenade through the city streets.

If you miss the festival, not to worry, videos of past festivals are usually on sale at travel agencies in town. Ask around for availability and the best prices.

MEXICO CITY HOTEL EXPELS CUBAN DELEGATION AT U.S. REQUEST, CAUSING DOMESTIC, INTERNATIONAL CONTROVERSIES.

25 08 2007

The Hotel Sheraton Maria Isabel in Mexico City set off an international controversy after expelling 16 Cuban officials from its premises in early February. The hotel said it made the decision at the instruction of its parent company, US-based Starwood Hotels. The parent company was following the directive of the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in accordance with the US embargo against Cuba. Under the Helms-Burton Law, US companies are prohibited from supplying services to Cuban individuals or companies.
