Cancun is Back and Better than Ever!

11 09 2007

On October 21, 2005, Cancun was struck by Hurricane Wilma, the most intense Atlantic storm on record. However, after little more than a year, Cancun has remerged as an even more enticing destination. With over $1.5 billion committed to the citywide rebuilding effort, resorts have not only repaired their structures, but have improved upon pre-storm conditions. Nearly all of the city’s restaurants and bars have reopened, many with sparkling new additions and renovations. However, Cancun isn’t finished. Many more improvements will be completed early this season, guaranteeing that this could be the best year ever to visit beautiful Cancun.

Perhaps the best upgrades in Cancun were performed on the world-famous beaches. Known for their wide stretches of white powder sand, Cancun’s beaches were reduced to rocks by Wilma’s storm surge. Yet, because of eroding beachfronts throughout the world, the technology of beach reclamation has grown by leaps and bounds. Belgian firm, Jan de Nul, used their latest innovations to extract 96 million cubic feet of pristine sand from the waters off the Mexican coast. After the sand was transported by a pair of vessels back to shore, giant pipes succeeded in reforming up to a half mile of beach per week.

Yet, Cancun didn’t settle for a copy of the old beaches. According to Cancun’s Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, “The white beaches are what Cancun is all about. So we wanted to make sure we were getting that same silky sand that people love and a lot more of it than before.” In fact, the new beaches of Cancun average 140 feet in width, double the 70 foot width visitors were accustomed to not long ago. This sizable upgrade means not only will the beaches of Cancun look better than ever before, but visitors will have much more room to play or relax in the sun.

Cancun’s finest resorts certainly didn’t spare any expense during the reconstruction either. In addition to necessary repairs and upgrades required as a result of the storm, tourists will also recognize a number of notable improvements at their favorite resorts, from new recreational facilities to larger rooms. The streets of the Hotel Zone have even been lined with 6,000 fully-grown palm trees.

Furthermore, most of the major construction and renovation in the Hotel Zone was completed by the end of 2006, so current visitors won’t be bothered. Though a few resorts will be remodeling through 2007, very few tourists have been distracted. Through August 2006, Cancun had already returned to 79% hotel room capacity, just below annual averages for the summer off-season. In fact, many of these visitors were unaware of the rebuilding that took place as nearly all of the resorts and businesses were open during the 2006 holiday travel season.

The nearby island of Cozumel, a popular cruise ship port, also underwent extensive renovations. One of the island’s primary piers reopened to cruise ships at the end of 2006, while the other will reopen later this year. Inland from Cancun, millions of acres of Mexico’s famous jungles remain undamaged. Most importantly, the historic Mayan ruins near Cancun were unharmed and remain open for tours. If you still had any doubts regarding the success of Cancun’s recovery, the leading travel publications have already returned the city to its lofty position. Conde Nast Traveler, Travelocity.com, 10best.com and many others have ranked Cancun as both a top beach destination and a leading choice for quick getaways. Furthermore, the American Express Travel Report, one of the most respected studies of upcoming travel trends, has rated Cancun as the fifth-most popular international destination for the coming year.

These accolades and the growing evidence of a successful rebuilding effort points not only to a miraculous resurgence for this luxurious resort city, but also highlights Cancun’s eternal allure.

Can You Really Enjoy World Travel On A Mini Budget

11 09 2007

Many people hold in their dreams to become a world traveler, or to at least go on at least one trip to a foreign locale. The reason most people do not act on their desire to travel abroad is of course financial. There are ways to enjoy world travel on a budget, but you have to know where to look and where to lay your concern when searching for the right vacation destination and flight.

Although in recent years there have been more students that request student loans and government grant so get through their college years, there is also a surge in the number of college aged students that take trips to foreign locations. These excursions occur partly because of a foreign studies program or missions trip that is offered by the school and often partially covered from the semester’s tuition, but also because Americans, as a whole, are more apt to spend money that they do not have than they used to be.

In order to break down how students and adult travelers can travel abroad on a budget, we have to first separate the travel costs into categories. If you break down the trip into three categories and search for bargains in those three categories separately, you will be likely to find a good deal on each. The first category would be travel. The main portion of this category will likely be the trip to and from your destination, but you can also include transportation while on your vacation in this heading as well. For example, if you are traveling through Europe, you may be more likely to need several flights while on your vacation, whereas a trip to the Bahamas or Cancun would require only local travel.

Begin researching flight costs. You should do this at no less than three locations. Those three would be a travel agent, the internet (sites like Priceline and Travelocity), and the airlines themselves. At separate times, you may get the best price at any of these locations. If you think the first place you find a price for a flight is a great price, keep looking, you can always come back and get it in a few hours, after you have checked around. Also, if you are planning several smaller flights while on your vacation, there are great deals for short flights throughout Europe. These can also be researched on the internet or through your travel agent. If you are planning to rent a car, check with local companies in your home country to see if they can recommend a rental place in your destination, but also check with the locals once you have arrived and see where they recommend. Many times, the locals know better than anyone where to find a good deal.

Searching for a hotel can be done in much the same way as searching for your transportation needs. You should always check at least three separate places before committing. Know also that hotels in other countries are likely not the same as hotels in your own backyard. Many hotels may have community showers, while others will have private baths in each room or suite. Make a list of questions to be answered before booking any hotel. Once you have decided that the hotel you have selected is satisfactory in both appearance and price, then you should book the hotel to insure a room is available for you and your travel companion.

Finally, we come to entertainment money, or spending money as some would call it. You will inevitably want to spend money on your vacation, whether it be for meals or souvenirs for grandma. In all money spending situations, use your common sense. In foreign countries, it could be difficult to remember the exchange rate and know what you are spending on certain items, so an electronic exchange calculator is a great tool for your outings.

How to Best Choose your Hotel in Madrid and Barcelona Spain

8 09 2007

You’ve got your money saved up for a dream vacation to Spain. Madrid, Spain’s beautiful and historic capital city will be your primary destination with possibly a few days excursion to Barcelona. You know where you want to go, but do you know which hotel in Madrid to book for room reservations? How about Barcelona hotels? Some people’s first thought would be to go online and try out one of the faceless, generic travel websites. However, that is not the way to go if you want to really experience Spain. So put down that computer mouse and think about the things you want to do on your dream vacation. Let your itinerary be your guide to choosing from one of the hotels in Madrid and Barcelona.

First of all, why choose Spain? Consider all the reasons why you want to spend your hard earned vacation in Spain. Are you a history buff and plan to take several walking tours around Madrid and see the Prado Museum and Royal Palace? Will you want to see Plaza Major and Puerta del Sol? Does a wine excursion for a day sound like heaven? Think about the different places in the general area you want to go then book one of the Madrid hotels in the area. By choosing a central location to the activities you want to partake in, you are maximizing your time to spend on vacation pursuits and less time in the back of a taxi or bus traveling to various destinations.

Accommodations run amok from discount hotels in Madrid, Spain to luxury hotels with high star ratings. Once you determine some of the things you want to do in Madrid, then you can decide what your budget will allow in regards to a Madrid hotel. If you basically just need a place to lay your head at night, there are two star hotels available or you can get great deals sometimes with cheap luxury hotels.

Another thing to think about in regards to your vacation is whether or not you will have more than one destination. Madrid is a popular stop on a Spanish vacation and many people put it first on their travel itinerary. If you plan another place to visit like Barcelona, you have to take that into account when staying at a hotel in Madrid. Sometimes, you can get discounts if you stay a certain amount of days, so you will want to plan accordingly.

While Barcelona is a few hours away from Madrid, the city has its own charm and share of beautiful sights to see. Like the lodging in Madrid, you will find a host of accommodations in Barcelona from the luxury hotels to the unassuming two star hotels. And again, your itinerary will be your guide as to the best place to stay. You want to be in a central location, close to all the things you want to do.

Another few thoughts to ponder in your quest for accommodations in Madrid or Barcelona are the time of year you want to visit and if you are planning a solo adventure or one for the whole family. The most popular times to travel in Spain are the months of May through September. These are the warmest times of year. They are also the most popular in terms of hotels in Madrid and Barcelona. Prices can be at a premium, so traveling with family can be more than you can afford. However, the off season months in Spain will bring lower rates in Barcelona and Madrid hotels and less crowded tourist sites. Traveling with a family during the off-season might be perfect for the budget conscious traveler.

In review, there are several things to be aware of when choosing hotels in Madrid and Barcelona. First, determine the places you want to see and the activities you want to do. Secondly, decide on the budget you can afford. And third, based on the first two answers, determine if traveling in the off-season might be more beneficial when shopping for Barcelona and Madrid hotels.

The Magic Of Cancun Sand And About Its Beaches

22 08 2007

If you’re coming down to Cancun it’s not because there’s an Office Depot (yes there is an Office Depot as numerous other chain stores). You are coming for the beaches of sugar-white sand. The white sands of Cancun are composed of fragments of shell and coral and are always cool to the touch. So if you walk barefoot in the midday sun no matter how hot the sand is always cool for your feet. Scientists are still perplexed by the mystery of Cancun sand. Have you ever tried to walk on the sand of beaches in other parts of the world barefoot? Ouch! Not here! Walk for miles and miles.

Those beaches from the town to Punta Cancun (the center of the hotel zone) face Isla Mujeres so waters tend to be calm and child-safe as the waters are sheltered. The ocean here is shallow and calm. However the water on the open-side of the hotel zone of Cancun from Punta Cancun to Punta Nizuc (Hotel Hotetur) is just the opposite. Characterized by pounding surf and strong currents, care should be taken. Mind you the views are awesome. The undertow on these beaches may be quite strong.

Always check the warning flags posted on the beach in front of the hotels. Red or black means dangerous conditions. You ask why two different colors to signify the same thing? Good question. Sometimes one color gets lost. Yellow indicates precaution and not may be some warm spots. Green or blue indicate ideal swimming conditions.

Some public access beaches in the northern part of the hotel zone where waters are calm are Playa Las Perlas next to Hotel Imperial Las Perlas. Playa Tortugas. Playa Caracol, Playa Juventud, and Playa Linda.

Beaches on the open ocean in the southern part of the hotel zone are Chac Mool, Playa Marlin, Ballenas, and Playa del Rey (Delfines or Mirador). The beaches become quite crowded on Sundays and holidays. Strong winds blowing in from the Caribbean can change the coastline. Waves breaking on a beach at a certain angle can erode the sand and deposit it further north or south hence some beaches may become narrower and others wider.

About snorkeling: Yes, there are many costly tours for snorkeling in and around Cancun. But major expenses are not really necessary. And snorkeling in Cancun’s crystal clear waters will be an experience one will never forget. The different coral and fish put you in another world. REMEMBER: All beaches in Mexico are public. This is federal law. So you can snorkel where you want. Enjoy! And careful with the sun your first few days.

Cancun Travel Agencies

22 08 2007

As tourism is one of the most promising industries in Cancun, there has been a growing demand for travel agencies over the past few years. There are a number of family-run and private travel agencies throughout the coastal city.

Cancun travel agencies are solely committed to provide you the most enjoyable vacation experience. They compile information from different sources and organize travel itineraries. Based on your budget and preferences, the travel agencies suggest the best tour and related activities.

Both inbound and outbound tours are organized. They make necessary arrangements for your hotel accommodation, transportation, car rental, and recreation. All necessary international travel information such as your entry requirement, custom regulation, and currency exchange rates are provided. Most travel agencies offer travel insurance for their customers. Travel protection is also ensured, that is, they provide reimbursement if you are dissatisfied with their services.

Travel agencies offer their services using telemarketing, direct mail, and the Internet. They provide exciting discounts, when a reservation is placed online. Tailor-made tour packages are also offered, which suit both budget and luxury travelers. Apart from these, many hotels, cruise lines, and travel companies use Cancun travel agencies to promote their travel packages.

A number of sources are available for finding Cancun travel agencies. The best way is to search them online. You can go through message boards, which will have information about the local travel agencies in your area. You can also read reviews. Another consideration is to ask around to your friends and family members.

Before depending on any travel agency, you must make sure that it is a member of the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). Such travel agents can work with other society members and find the best deals for the travelers. Some travel agencies in Cancun are accredited by the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) also.

Always choose experienced travel agencies, which maintain a good relationship with other recognizable companies in the travel industry. Such agencies will be capable of getting special deals on hotels, airfare, and other ticket reservations.

Tips for Travelling in the Desert

22 08 2007

Most of the scenic destination profiles and photos you’ll see on my Scenic Treasures site will be in the Southwestern area of the United States. And just like any other area of the world where weather can be extreme, there are things you should know before starting out on your adventure. Even if you’re just planning a day trip, these are very important:

1. Take extra water. Both for your vehicle and the people travelling with you. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 1 gallon per person, plus 1 or more gallons for your car.

2. Take snacks or dried food items. This should be something that can hold up to a lot of heat. The desert gets extremely hot at certain times of the year, and inside your car it can go well above 150 degrees. So you want food items that can withstand those temperatures without going bad.

3. Take blankets, sheets, towels, or other items that can block the sun. If your car breaks down, you can hang these on the windows to keep most of the strength out, thus keeping out some of the heat, and keeping you from becoming severely sunburned.

4. Wear a hat. This is especially important for people with light colored or thin hair, because your scalp will sunburn badly - very quickly.

5. Keep gloves on hand. This sounds strange, but if your car is parked in the sun for even a short amount of time, everything in it becomes extremely hot. Getting back in and just touching the steering wheel for instance, or trying to turn the ignition key, can literally burn your skin. It’s like touching a hot stove.

6. Beware of leather seats. This is critical particularly for baby car seats. The leather heats up drastically when the sun is directly on it. But even without the sun, leather gets super hot in the desert during the day and it can burn you very badly.

Cancun Travel

21 08 2007

Overview
Cancun is a city seated at the foot of the Yucatan Peninsula, bordered on one side by the Caribbean Sea. Seeing as the city was built primarily as a tourist attraction, it lacks in some of the cultural aspects that can be found in other Mexican cities. However, what Cancun lacks in historical appeal it makes up for in amenities and natural beauty. The main tourist area is located along the coast of the Caribbean Sea, and this is where you’ll find all of the city’s all-inclusive hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, and shopping malls. Don’t expect to be surrounded by locals in this part of the city — your vacation is more likely going to be spent with other tourists. However, a short drive to downtown Cancun may bring you a more traditional Mexican experience. Downtown Cancun is away from the touristy coast and has retained most of its culture and appeal amidst the popularity of the city’s Caribbean coastline.

Sightseeing Attractions
While Cancun is the home to a lot of natural beauty, it doesn’t have much to offer as far as historical and architectural appeal is concerned. Additionally, most of the sightseeing attractions were created with tourism in mind. However, one glimpse at the white sand coasts that spill into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea and you’ll forget that you’re surrounded by other tourists. Other notable sightseeing attractions include Xcaret, the Interactive Aquarium, and Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres is only a short ferry ride away from the main tourist hub, and it offers some distance from the manufactured feel of the hotel zone.

Outdoor Attractions
One Cancun company offers visitors the opportunity to rent a Jeep and take it for a drive to see things like Mayan ruins, an interactive zoo, a jungle reserve, and a natural Mexican city. This may be worthwhile if you’re craving some stimulation outside of the beachside activities. Other outdoor attractions available at all of the Caribbean coast beaches include snorkeling, fishing, swimming, boating, jet skiing, parasailing, scuba diving, and sunbathing. Vendors scattered along the beaches will provide tourists with the necessary services or tools to aid them in their beach adventures.

Nightlife
There are obviously many shops, restaurants, and clubs located throughout the hotel zone on the Caribbean coast. Expect to find just about every worldly cuisine imaginable as well as high-priced department stores and souvenir shops. Though Cancun’s nightlife is manufactured and not a representation of the city’s culture, it is enjoyable nonetheless. Many beach bars offer live music and specialize in making margaritas and piña coladas. However, you won’t find the locals in any of these areas.

Cancun Visited

The most visited destination in Mexico, according to estimates, Cancun hotels boast over twenty-five thousand rooms. The incredible biodiversity of Cancun can be gauged from the fact that there bird species account for over four hundred and seventy five species in number, over a hundred different mammals and twelve hundred plant species.

The beaches of Cancun are aplenty and even some of Cancun hotels are magnificent. So much so, it has been observed, that many tourists, do not leave their hotel grounds their entire holiday on a tour of Cancun, Mexico. These resort hotels located near ocean beaches are a tourist attraction by themselves. Some of the best marine species and over five hundred different tropical fish are the viewers delight in the region.

Cancun is split in two sections: one is the hotel zone located between a lagoon and seaside hotels on Cancun Island and the other is Cancun City/Downtown located on the mainland and home to the many Mexicans living in the district. The Caribbean Sea surrounds the island to the north and the south side.

On a tour of Cancun City, you will most probably like the main vendor markets located on Tulum Avenue. This area is home to many restaurants and boutiques. You can pick up almost anything from here ranging from cigars to exotic perfumes at reasonable prices.

He cheapest way to moving around Cancun is by public bus. Apart from that, taxis and car rental agencies are also available for you to choose. The tourist zone of the city however, has everything within walking distance.
