Traveling in Mexico: Don’t Fall for the Latin Fantasy Tourist Scam

21 08 2007

THE “LATIN FANTASY”: A SCAM YOU MUSTN’T GO FOR: They’re WAITING for you…Don’t get caught!

Strolling down a sunlit street in Cancun (or another Mexican beach resort town), a sea breeze gently tossing your hair, window-shopping in a luxurious mall, passing along a beachfront boardwalk, day-dreaming of fresh, succulent seafood as its aroma wafts from a nearby restaurant. “Excuse me”, you hear. You stop and turn to see a smiling face. “Where are you from?”

“I’m from …”, you respond politely.

“How’s your vacation?”, the smiling face continues. You exchange pleasantries.

“Can I offer you a free pass…a night’s stay…a free lunch or dinner…a day at this new resort hotel?”, the smiling face offers. “It’s to promote a new hotel, …resort…facility…or service that isn’t well-known to foreign tourists yet. And we want our hotel…facility…resort…or service to be known so you can tell your friends about it.”

You receive a genuine-looking piece of paper and perhaps a brochure and map. (somewhere in the back of your mind, your parent’s words- or mine- appear, “There ain’t no free lunches in this world”) But, “Looks good”, you think, and accept.

“Take this and go this afternoon…tomorrow or whatever and everything will be taken care of with no obligation”, the hook advances.

And then the clincher words strike home, like a harpoon in the side of a great white whale, “Be sure to bring your credit card!” “Oh, it’s not essential”, the smiling face continues, “Maybe you’ll just have to flash it, to show you’re not Mexican”, “…or a serious tourist”, or whatever.

At this point BAIL OUT – drop everything and leave – go, keep going and don’t listen or look back. If you don’t, you’ll be sorry – for years and years to come.

What they want is your credit card number, by any means necessary - your signature too, if possible, on anything; a ticket stub, free car rental agreement or thank you note; anything. It’ll be used to charge dozens, scores, even hundreds of items – next week, next month, next year, etc., etc., etc. Getting the charges off your card will be a next to impossible nightmare and cost you hundreds in legal fees. You won’t be able to get back at “them” or recover the merchandise, products, even real estate charged off to your account. Millions are made by “them” and irretrievably lost by unsuspecting tourists each year. Don’t YOU be next! Just say, “NO”. And keep saying “NO”.

Traveling in Mexico: Where to Stay in Cancun Without Spending Your Inheritance

18 08 2007

WHERE TO STAY IN CANCUN:

If you’re dreaming of a bungalow on the beach and living with the sounds of waves lapping crystal sands as music to your ears lulling you like a lullaby - return to earth - those places cost far more than you’ll probably ever be able to afford as a working English language teacher here. If you’ll consider living as the locals do, then you’ll be off the beach, but only a few minutes bus ride away from the powdery, sugar-like sands of one of the world’s most pristine stretches of diatomaceous beach. Still interested?

Most of Cancun’s more affordable hotels are near the main bus terminal on the Avenida Uxmal or the Avenida Tulum. It’s an easy area to get to or away from starting from any point in the Cancun area. Buses to the beach and resorts run along the Avenida Tulum. It’s also a relatively safe area at night with plenty of places to eat, shop, and work located nearby. Note: Prices in Cancun are higher than in most other Mexican cities for the same or similar services and from there rise dramatically during the Winter months.

Hotel El Alux
Avenida Uxmal No. 21
884 – 0662, 884 – 0556
This small hotel has reasonably-priced air-conditioned (you’ll need it) rooms with TV, phone and hot water for 220 pesos, single or 240 pesos for a double. Staff is friendly and helpful. A travel agent and car rental agency are on the ground floor with tour information and budget-priced vehicles available. You can walk here from the bus station, just go to the corner of Avenida Uxmal, cross the street and go left for one block. It’s the multi-story pink building.

Hotel Cotty
Avenida Uxmal No. 44
884 – 1319, 884 – 0550
For about the same prices as the Hotel Alux, you can get lodging in this motel-style inn across and down the street a bit. It’s not as nice, but the services are adequate and rooms are clean. There are only two floors, so an elevator isn’t necessary and rooms open onto a central courtyard that doubles as a parking area. Make sure to get an air-conditioned room, the Yucatan sizzles in Summer. A restaurant is on the premises with inexpensive fare on the menu. It’s also open late.

Hotel Uxmal
Avenida Uxmal No. 111
884 – 2266, 884 – 2355
Two blocks further along the Avenida Uxmal, near Berlitz, this inexpensive, family-run hotel is popular with the locals as a “love motel”, since the Avenida Yaxchilan is closeby. No “working girls” or “ladies of the evening” though. So, it’s OK as an alternate if you’re having trouble finding a place soon after arrival. Check the room first before paying as quality can vary widely. Rooms with A/C are more, but worth it if available. Prices are around 160 pesos to 180 pesos. Some rooms are even less, but without A/C, though they do have a fan.

Downtown Cancun Hotels

18 08 2007

The tourist destinations that have been very successful in drawing huge numbers of visitors are not only known because of the beautiful sites they offer, but also for having an adequate infrastructure to accommodate a large number of visitors. Among the necessary infrastructure that needs to be put in place are the accommodations that guests stay in during their visit. If a place does not have adequate accommodations, visitors choose to stay away even if a certain place has some of the most breathtaking sites. One of the places that have been very successful in providing an adequate infrastructure with regard to accommodations is Cancun, Mexico — one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Evidence to the fact that Cancun can accommodate all visitors is the number of available rooms (26,000), spread across different hotels and resorts. Apart from the large number of rooms, Cancun also boasts that these hotels maintain one of the world’s highest standards of service. Most of these hotels are located in the Hotel Zone that provides some of the best ocean views in the world.

Hotels that are not located in the Hotel Zone are located downtown and offer some of the more affordable rates in Cancun. Even though they are more affordable, they have some of the best amenities and offer excellent services. For people who stay in these hotels, there are shuttle services to the beaches, so guests need not worry on how they can enjoy Cancun’s great beaches. Among the hotels in Cancun, some of the more notable American hotel chains include the Holiday Inn, the Marriott, the Ritz Carlton, the Sheraton, and the Westin.

There is a wide range of choices that visitors can choose from with regard to their accommodations during their visit to Cancun. This is because Cancun has about 26,000 rooms spread across different hotels, which are either located near the beach (Hotel Zone) or downtown. For a more practical choice, downtown hotels are the way to go, as they provide accommodations at more affordable rates. However, lower rates does not mean less amenities and services, as these hotels still provide world class service and amenities that can be found in their Hotel Zone counterparts.

Cancun Girls Gone Wild, Wilma Shows All

18 08 2007

Cancun is one of the favorite College Spring Break areas for our next up and coming generation. Everyone knows that college students on Spring Break get a little crazy. Indeed, Cancun is one of those “Spring Break” type vacation spots.

It is also a place where Swim Suit Models model for each consecutive year’s Calendars. Any Super Model who has ever made a name for her self has had a photo shoot in Cancun’s beautiful settings. And some less glamorous amateur models have also show and strutted their self in Cancun on the “Girls Gone Wild” videos. Of course these things make parents ashamed of their daughters, but like Boys will be boys, girls have been known to go wild. Often these gals find their pictures on websites where people rate their displays on a scale of one to five stars.

Well, it appears Wilma got jealous of the Girl’s Gone Wild videos and she decided to go check out the area herself. Her photos are also being displayed on the Internet on the NOAA Hurricane Tracking System website. The top meteorologists have called her a Category Five, some say they need to change the Saffir-Simpson scale to rate her as a SIX. She is that well defined in a wicked sort of way. In fact Hurricane Wilma maybe the most wicked woman to ever hit the shores of the Yucatan. Wilma has already killed 13 people and she is headed for Cozumel and Cancun to drop over 15-20 inches of rain over three days flooding everything and struting her stuff. Moral of the story; Don’t trust young gals in Cancun as they strut their stuff. Think on it.

Visit Cancun Mexico

18 08 2007

Perched at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula along the Caribbean coast, Cancun is the ideal place for a Mexican getaway if your idea of the perfect vacation involves spending hours spread out on a gorgeous beach with the sun radiating above you. With its sparkling white sand and stunning blue waters, the beaches in Cancun can entertain and enthrall you with their sheer beauty and wondrous sights. Throw in the lively nightlife and abundant water activities, and you have the makings of a relaxing, entertaining vacation along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

Although Cancun is typically known as a popular Spring Break destination for high school seniors and college students, there is more to this tourist resort than a low drinking age. Whether you are looking to soak in the heat of the summer (late June is blazing hot) or the gentle warmth of the off season, there is a perfect time for you to enjoy all this bustling tourist city has to offer.

The beginning of summer is possibly the best time to see Cancun so you can avoid the rowdy students and the hurricane season. When you arrive, make a beeline for the beaches on the northern side, which is also where you will find the exclusive and expensive hotel zone. This area has upscale hotels, restaurants, and bars that back up to pristine beaches on the ocean such as Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, and Playa Las Perlas. Playa Las Perlas is great for swimming and sunning while the other two beaches are great for water sports such as jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and parasailing.

When spending time on the northern side of Cancun, take a day trip to Isla Mujeres, which is located eight miles off the shore. There are ferries to the island from many of the beaches and here you can tour the terrain on a scooter, play beach volleyball on the soft white sand, or explore Garafon Park. Garafon Park is located on the island’s south side and while not used for sunning since it lacks a sandy beach, visitors can swim with fish that will follow around anyone who has food.

The eastern side of Cancun is mostly unprotected since it does not have an island to shelter it from the waves like the northern side. This means the waves can become quite large at times so it is important to use precaution when exploring beaches such as Playa Ballenas, Punta Nizuc, and San Miguelito. If you enjoy jumping over waves or participating in water sports that take advantage of wavy conditions (there are numerous jet ski rental outlets here), then the eastern side may be the ideal place for you to throw down a towel and dive headfirst into the water.

An excellent water-oriented place to check out is Xcaret Eco Theme Park, which offers swim with the dolphins tours, snorkeling and snuba diving (diving without a tank) to the barrier reef, and sea treks that allow visitors without diving experience to walk along the ocean floor. In the middle of the hotel zone, make your way to the interactive aquarium for an up close look at the native marine life. You can touch nurse sharks, stingrays, and starfish or swim with dolphins in a large pool at this moderately sized but modern aquarium.

If you are interested in the popular tourist nightlife of Cancun, Carlos and Charlie’s, Coronaville, and Señor Frogs can meet your entertainment needs with their lively atmosphere and contagious excitement. Jump into a conga line or spend the evening laughing with friends as you soak in the always entertaining festivities. For a more club-like experience, head over to O Ultra Lounge or The City so you can dance the night away with some of the top entertainers and DJs in the world. These venues promise a memorable night if you are willing to deal with the hassle of getting into a chic, popular club that has great acts and entertainment.

Since the beach will most likely be a large part of your Cancun adventure, make it the most convenient attraction by staying in one of the many Cancun vacation rentals that line the sandy shores of the ocean. A day at the beach is just steps out your back door and if you prefer a little privacy while sunning, simply stroll back to your patio so you can soak up the sun without masses surrounding you. Experience a laid back and relaxing Cancun vacation on your own terms when you stay in vacation rental that has all the amenities of home with a view that will forever leave you speechless.

Visiting Cancun on the Cheap

16 08 2007

With its whitewashed beaches and azure waters, the Mexican paradise of Cancun balances the peace of the beach with a fun and fabulous nightlife, including clubs such as Coco Bongo and My Place.

When you’re not lazing or dancing, you can swim with dolphins, deep sea dive, and snorkel - or golf, shop, ride horses, and drink in the ancient Mayan archeological sites.

In October of 2006, Hurricane Wilma devastated many areas of the Peninsula. But help has since rolled in from all over the world, and many areas of the city have been rebuilt. In some cases, they have been upgraded to higher quality hotels and wider beaches.

Best Travel Times

The hurricane season begins in September, so opt for cancellation insurance when booking flights during this time.

You might also want to consider planning your vacation during the Northern Hemisphere’s off peak winter months, because airfares and hotel rates tend to be less inflated. Look for mid-week bargains, which are generally most significant from Tuesday through Thursday. You can save a lot by shopping around for travel packages and discount air travel. Make sure you tell your travel agent about your budget and what kinds of attractions and experiences are most important to you. If you don’t work with a travel agent, keep your eye on the major online travel sites to snag the best deals. Here is a web page that compiles and posts updated coupon codes from Travelocity, Expedia, Site59.com and CheapCarribean.com: http://www.momscape.com/discounts/mexico-travel-deals.htm

Keep your eyes and ears open for deals on the following popular hotels, in particular:

- Le Blanc Spa & Resort
- Royal Sands
- JW Marriot Cancun Resort & Spa
- Ritz-Carlton Cancun
- Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort
- Marriot CasaMagna Cancun Resort
- Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Cancun
- Riu Palace Las Americas
- Royal Islander
- Riu Cancun

Surrounding Attractions

There are so many things to do in the Cancun area, you can afford to be selective. Plan ahead for day trips and go early, before the sun gets too hot and the crowds come out en masse.

Here are some popular attractions in the area you’ll want to consider:

- Chichen Itza – Ancient Mayan archeological structures
- MayaVenture – A labyrinth with treasure hunts
- Plaza de Toros – A bullring that has bullfights every Wednesday afternoon
- Cenotes – Deep, water-filled sinkholes in limestone
- Isla Mujeres – A small and charming island 8 miles across the baby from Cancun
- Playa del Carmen – Small resort town about 40 minutes south of Cancun by car
- Xcaret EcoPark and Sian Ka’an biosphere along the Riviera Maya
- Xel-Ha – Archeological site and ecopark, located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
- Tulum – Best known for its Mayan ruins. Tulum is also the starting place for much ecotourism and adventure travel.

Other Cancun Travel Considerations

If your primary goal is to visit Cancun on the cheap, the best advice is to find accommodations out of the “hotel zone” which is located smack-dab in the middle of the city. There are plenty of things to do there and lots of great places to visit but the hotel and restaurant prices can get pretty steep downtown.

Here is a checklist of items you’ll want to pack for your Cancun vacation:

- Clothing: Several pairs of comfortable shorts, tee-shirts, dress slacks, a sundress, sweater or light jacket, socks, undergarments, sandals, tennis shoes, plastic bag for dirty clothes
- First Aid: Pain relievers, eye-drops, necessary medications and prescriptions, band-aids, neck pillow
- Protection: Sunglasses, eye-glasses and/or contact lens, sun-visor or baseball cap, umbrella or rain poncho
- Snacks: Peanuts, crackers and/or potato chips, gum, candy and bottle of water
- Equipment: Camera, extra film, batteries, portable compact disc player with headphones, favorite book
- Documentation: Valid passport, driver’s license and/or birth certificate, emergency contact information, money and/or traveler’s checks, computer printout of airline ticket confirmation. (Make sure to write the name of your destination hotel inside and outside of luggage and be sure to have an adequate lock on each piece of baggage.)

Here’s a helpful webpage with more checklists of things to do before, during, and after your departure: http://www.cancun.bz/vacation_check_list.htm

Vacationing in Cancun need not be expensive because it doesn’t cost much at all to lounge on the beach, swim, backpack, picnic, take photos, walk along the beaches and the streets, and to simply sit still and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city and surf.

Cancun and Cozemel Cleanup Curtailed by Tropical Storm Gamma

16 08 2007

Hurricane Wilma was a Catastrophe for the resort regions of the Yucatan, but now Cancun and Cozemel are being cleaned up for hopefully a late season tourist rebound. Unfortunately that clean-up effort is going to be seriously curtailed by Tropical Storm Gamma, which will drop heavy rain on the area.

Wilma waged war on the region as she broke Western World Weather records, some say the area may never be the same. Many people who had scheduled vacations there this winter are finding themselves re-routing to other Caribbean destinations, but the 2005 Tropical Hurricane Season is still not over yet. Meanwhile last week Puerto Rico was pummeled by a tropical depression number 27, which some say should have been called a Tropical Storm Gamma. But instead now we have Tropical Storm Gamma formed in a similar place as Hurricane Wilma.

It will take the resort areas until next year to get back to anything that appears to be normal and Mexico will have lost Billions in their tourist trade by then. Still worse is the threat that Tropical Storm Gamma may drop as much as 10 inches on the already ruined resort region. This will only hamper the reconstruction efforts as roads are flooded, power is still out in many places and most of the buidlings were damaged. Think on this.
